Troy Brown has been a central figure in the resurgence of the University of Saint Mary men’s basketball program, serving as the head coach of the Spires since he was first named interim head coach in November 2014. After guiding the team to an impressive 22–9 record and a second-place finish in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) during that initial season, he was named the permanent head coach in March 2015.
Under Brown’s leadership, the Spires have enjoyed multiple 20-win seasons and consistent competitiveness in the KCAC, and he has played an influential role in recruiting and developing standout talent throughout his tenure. In recognition of his impact on the program and the NAIA landscape, Brown was honored in 2022 as one of the top 100 most impactful coaches in NAIA basketball by Silver Waves Media.
Before taking the helm as head coach, Brown spent several years with the Spires as an assistant, beginning in 2011. In that role, he helped Saint Mary achieve its best record in school history at the time with a 25–6 mark and was key in bringing in and nurturing over 100 KCAC All-Conference athletes and multiple NAIA All-Americans. His early involvement with the program laid the groundwork for the success the Spires would later enjoy under his direction.
Brown’s connection to Saint Mary runs deep. A former standout player for the Spires himself, he competed at the college from 1999–2001 after stops at Southwest State (Minnesota) and Augustana College (South Dakota). As a senior in 2001, he averaged 23 points per game, served as team MVP and captain, and helped lead Saint Mary to a KCAC championship and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
Off the court, Brown’s commitment to the sport and to mentoring young athletes is mirrored by his personal life. He and his wife Amanda, whom he met during his playing days at Saint Mary, are parents to two sons, Jordan and Zeek. Through his sustained dedication to the Spires’ program and his roots as a player, Brown has become a respected leader in NAIA basketball and a pillar of the Saint Mary athletics community.
