Leavenworth, Kan.—
Game One:
USM erased a two-run deficit and pulled even in the sixth inning, but Bethany College answered with an unearned run in the seventh to hand the Spires a 3-2 loss Saturday in game one of Senior Day in Leavenworth. A turning point in the opening frames came after the Swedes Miller singled to open the top of the seventh and eventually scored on Pickering's RBI ground out, putting Bethany back in front for good.
The Swedes broke through first in the third. Rivas came around to score on a catcher error for a 1-0 lead, then Bethany added another run in the fourth after Senecaut tripled to left field and later scored on Miller's RBI ground out. That gave Bethany a 2-0 advantage despite USM starter
Desarae Chavez continuing to limit bigger damage in the circle.
The Spires chipped away in the fifth and cut the margin to 2-1 when Chavez helped her own effort with an RBI ground out to first base. An inning later, Saint Mary found the equalizer.
Grace Rose scored on
Brooke Gerling's RBI double to left, tying the game at 2-2 and giving the home side momentum heading into the final inning.
Bethany finished with three runs on five hits and two errors, while USM totaled two runs on six hits and committed three errors.
Brianna Camarena led the Spires at the plate with two hits and Gerling supplied one of the Spires two doubles, and USM also drew three walks and was hit by two pitches, but left six runners on base.
Chavez turned in a complete-game effort for Saint Mary, working all seven innings and allowing five hits and three runs. Desarae struck out four and walked one on 83 pitches. Bethany's pitching staff held off the late push after Yoder threw five innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. BC closed out the final two innings after the Spires sixth-inning rally, preserving the one-run decision.
Game Two:
The final game of the series saw the Spires strike first in the opening inning and never gave Bethany a way back, beating the Swedes 4-0 to wrap up Senior Day behind a complete-game shutout from
Grace Rose.
The decisive tone was set quickly.
Raegan McConnell opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, and the Spires added another run later in the inning when
Audrey Spellman delivered an RBI single. That early 2-0 cushion held up as Rose controlled the game from the circle, limiting the Swedes to five hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out four on 90 pitches.
The Spires wouldn't add on again until the sixth, but the offense consistently applied pressure. USM finished with 10 hits, drew four walks and stole two bases against Bethany starter Stelzig. The key insurance runs came in the bottom of the sixth, when a walk and a Camarena single, followed by a stolen base, set the table for
Nora Burrell. Burrell lined a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-0.
Burrell finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while McConnell went 1 for 4 with the home run, one RBI and one run scored. Rose also helped herself offensively after McConnell's first-inning blast, doubling before Spellman brought home the inning's second run. Saint Mary collected two doubles and one home run as part of its balanced attack on their last outing on their home turf for the 2025-26 season.
Bethany threatened only sporadically against Rose, leaving five runners on base and failing to capitalize on its lone extra-base hit. The USM defense backed their starter with a clean defensive effort, as neither team committed an error. Stelzig went six innings for Bethany and was charged with four runs, four walks and one strikeout.
The shutout followed the clearest outline of the game from start to finish: an early swing from McConnell, steady work from Rose and a late cushion from Burrell. The Spires will travel South to Bartlesville, Oklahoma on Tuesday, April 21
st to take on the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles to cap off their 2026 regular season stint. First pitch in Oklahoma is slated for 2:00 p.m.
