USM Women Earn Their Fourth KCAC Victory

Sterling, Kan.— The USM women also opened with control in doubles and carried that momentum into singles play yesterday morning in Sterling, defeating the Warriors 6-1 in the Spires fourth KCAC victory. USM finished with a 2-0-1 mark in doubles and won five of six singles matches to secure the team result.

The Spires did an excellent job setting the tone early. The No. 1 doubles pairing of Mia Rojas and Shannon Finn delivered one of the day's clearest results, a clean 6-0 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Courtney Standley and Monserrat Guerrero were listed with a 4-1 result, while the team totals recorded one doubles match as INC, giving the Spires majority doubles wins.

The Spire depth showed up even more clearly once singles began. Shannon Finn posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, Monserrat Guerrero earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3, and Courtney Standley added another clean performance of her own with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 4. Those straight-set efforts helped the Spires quickly build separation in the overall scoring and momentum of the day.

The lone point for Sterling came at No. 1 singles, where Danna Arroyo defeated Rojas after the match split the first two sets and moved to a deciding set tiebreak. Even with that result, Saint Mary controlled the rest of the lineup.

Finn was central to the win in both phases of the match, pairing with Rojas for the shutout in No. 1 doubles before adding her own shutout at No. 2 singles. Guerrero and Standley also contributed in doubles and followed with decisive singles wins, giving USM key production across the top and middle of the lineup.

By the end of the afternoon, the Spires had turned strong doubles start into a complete 6-1 team victory. The women's final totals showed six team points, five singles wins, two doubles wins and one doubles tie in a performance built on early control and straight-set strength.

USM continues on their road campaign, but will have a week of training and recovery mixed in between. The Spires will travel to North Newton to take on the Bethel College Threshers on Saturday, April 4th with matches set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
