Wichita, Kan.—Day two got off to another strong start. In the first event on Saturday morning, Sophomore
Jeremy Shreve claimed 5
th place overall in the men's weight throw with a final mark of 15.67m, starting his team off with 4 quick points. Teammates
Robert Hennig and
Nolan Norberto would also place with Hennig finishing in 9
th (14.45m) and Norberto just behind him finishing 11
th (13.82m).
On the women's side, dual sport athlete
Emma Murphy would be the lone Spire to place. Murphy finished 5
th overall and added another 4 team points with her longest hurl landing 13.69m.
In the men's triple jump,
Juan Washington would represent USM and place 8
th overall in day two. Washington would post his furthest leap with a finish of 13.20m.
Freshman
Maya Newcomer would round out the top 10 KCAC finalist in the women's high jump, placing 8
th overall and reaching a mark of 1.58m (5-2.25).
Fellow freshman jumper Blaize Vaugh would place for the Spires in the men's high jump. Vaughn would land his highest mark at 1.86m (6-1.25). Senior
Justin Johnston would just barely miss the top 10, placing 11
th overall with a final mark of 1.81m (5-11.25). The men's HJ would conclude the field event portion of the championship weekend with the women's 600-meter run marking the beginning of day two's running events.
Kylee Sipes got her team on the board with a 10
th place finish in the women's 600m. The sophomore finished with a speedy time of 1:52.24.
On the men's side, Jonah McGivern gave it his all in the 600m. The freshman raced to the finish to earn 9
th place overall with a final time of 1:25.11.
The women proudly represented in the 1000m. Standout
Carly Holadia would fight to the finish and bring home 1
st place in the event to defend her title, gaining her team 10 additional points and proudly setting a new meet record with an impressive final time of 2:57.51. Teammate
Abigail White would be close behind, finishing 4
th overall in the event earning 5 team points with a final time of 3:03.97.
On the men's side,
Austin Howell,
Owen Dierenfeldt, and
Lukas Hein would finish in 4
th, 5
th, and 6
th place, respectively in the 1000m race. Howell would earn a final time of 2:29.75 (5 team points), Dierenfeldt with 2:35.98 (4 team points), and Hein with a final mark of 2:36.30 (3 team points).
Next up was the women's 60m hurdles and in true Spire fashion,
Jordyn Miller-Knuckles and
Hope Crabtree came to compete. Miller-Knickles would finish in 2
nd place overall, earning her squad 8 team points, with a speedy time of 8.99 seconds. Crabtree would be close behind in 4
th place and snag 5 team points with a finish of 9.19 seconds.
No surprise to the USM faithful as
Omarion Udell would be crowned the KCAC Champion in the men's 60m hurdles. Udell would claim 10 overall team points to go towards the Spire total and finish with an eye-catching mark of 8.28 seconds. Teammate
Blaize Vaughn would also place and earn his team 3 more points with a 6
th place finish and a final time of 8.62 seconds.
The Spire women would finish in 6
th, 7
th, and 8
th place in the women's 60m race.
Deslyne Cooper would lead her senior teammates in 6
th place, earning 3 team points, with a final time of 7.73. Sampson was up next in 7
th place, snagging an additional 2 points towards the team total and a final time of 7.79.
Keiyah Cole would round out the heat in 8
th place, earning her team a point, in her 7.85 second dash to the finish line.
Freshman
Noah Arndt would finish 4
th overall in the men's 60-meters. This earns his fellow Spires 5 team points in what was an extremely close finish between 3
rd and 4
th place with Noah earning a final time of 6.95 seconds, just .01 behind the 3
rd place finisher out of KWU.
Josie Tyrrell would claim her second championship title of the weekend when she dominated the track in the women's one mile run. Tyrrell would earn the gold with a final time of 5:17. Teammates
Liv Lohf and Serenity Desrosier Larson would be close behind in 4
th and 5
th place, respectively. Lohf would claim 4
th place with a final time of 5:30.13 with Larson taking 5
th at 5:36.51.
A host of Spire men would represent USM in the men's one mile.
Prince Ntozo would claim 5
th place overall, finishing with a 4:27.71 mark. Up next in quick succession was
James White and
Kenneth Howell in 6
th and 7
th place, respectively. White would finish with a time of 4:31.69 while Howell would show a 4:33.99 mark. Park O'Dell and
David Roberson Jr. would round out the USM placers with O'Dell finishing in 9
th place with a 4:36.07 finish and Roberson Jr. in 11
th place with a 4:40.30 mark.
Familiar faces
Deslyne Cooper,
Haley Sampson, and
Keiyah Cole would place in the top 6 in the women's 400-meter race. Cooper would excitedly come in 2
nd place overall, earning another 8 team points, with a 57.68 finish. Sampson would just trail her by a few milliseconds to earn 3
rd place and a 57.82 finish, and finally
Keiyah Cole would finish 6
th overall at a 59.45 mark.
The men's 400-meters would see lone Spire
Karlos Humphreys fight to the finish. Humphreys would snag 3
rd place overall, adding to total USM team tally, and finishing with a 50.34 mark.
Carly Holadia wasn't done yet for day two as she placed 2
nd overall in the women's 800-meter race. Carly earned 8 team points and finished with a 2:19.10 time, just a mere second behind the top finisher from Friends University at 2:18.45.
As for the men's 800-meters, USM had athletes
Austin Howell,
Owen Dierenfeldt, and
Lukas Hein representing. Howell would come home with 3
rd place at a 1:58.90 finish, while Dierenfeldt and Hein would finish in 5
th and 9
th place, respectively with final times of 2:00.68 and 2:02.40.
Deslyne Cooper and
Keiyah Cole would again appear in the top five in the women's 200-meter race. Cooper would earn a 3
rd place finish with a time of 25.36 seconds, adding 6 team points to the Spire total. Cole would place 5
th overall, earning 4 team points in a 25.81 finish.
Three Spire men would place in the 200-meter race.
Daniel Craig would battle for the top spot, but race away with 2
nd place overall just behind Ottawa with a 22.22 finish. Tristian Rogers would finish 7
th overall with a 22.68 finish and teammate
Karlos Humphreys would finish just behind him at 8
th place with a mark of 22.73.
Tyrrell, White, and Klaassen would still have some medals to rack up as they took 1
st, 2
nd, and 3
rd in the women's 3000-meter race. Tyrrell would earn her third gold medal of the weekend, finishing in the top spot yet again with a final time of 10:34.56. White would battle her teammate tightly, earning 2
nd overall with 8 team points and a time of 10:42.57. Rounding out the top three was
Ava Klaassen in 3
rd at 10:43.82.
The Spire men would also put up a strong showing in the 3000-meter race.
Kenneth Howell would secure a 4
th place finish, crossing the finish line at 8:52.77.
Aleksandr Krikov would race his teammate to the finish, grabbing 5
th place overall and a mark of 8:55.07. Next up was
Prince Ntozo in 7
th place overall and a 9:00.49 finish. Finishing it up for the Spires was Jorge Perez in 9
th place and a 9:01.67 finish and
Jonathan Eckstein in 11
th place, just barely missing the top 10 at 9:12.76.
Relay events were up next to round out the night, starting out with the women's 4000m DMR. The Spire squad consisting of
Liv Lohf,
Jordyn Miller-Knuckles,
Katie Cameron, and
Mesa Casper battled to the finish and claimed 4
th place overall with a final time of 13:29.32.
The men would finish in similar fashion. The DMR group consisting of Mohammed Elgossy,
Logan Hammersmith,
Jacson Cruse, and
Zackary Zumwalt claimed a 4
th place finish with a final time of 10:51.91.
In the final thrilling events of the night, the women's 4x400-meter relay team of
Hope Crabtree,
Deslyne Cooper,
Keiyah Cole, and
Haley Sampson came up big. The group finished in 2
nd place overall in a tight battle to the finish against a speedy Evangel team, with a 3:58.12 mark.
And finally, finishing out what was a hugely successful and rewarding weekend for the Spires, came the final event on day two. The men's 4x400 relay team made up of
Daniel Craig,
Riley Gibbs, Tristan Rogers, and
Karlos Humphreys absolutely battled. The four came up just .02 milliseconds away from a 2
nd place finish and ultimately claimed 3
rd place overall with a 3:25.29 finish just behind the Falcons of Friends University and the KWU Coyotes.
With that, the USM women would proudly claim the title of KCAC Indoor Track & Field Champions, as they skillfully earned a total of 170.5 team points. The men would also have a noteworthy weekend as they would take home 3
rd place overall with a final tally of 141 team points.
With this adrenaline pumping weekend under wraps, the Spires have their focus set on what's to come as the season finishes up in Florida early next month. USM is scheduled to head to the Nebraska Tune-Up in Lincoln, Nebraska on Friday, February 20
th in what will be their final competition before Gainesville.
