Women's Wrestling Dominates Spire Classic

Leavenworth, Kan.—Spire women's wrestling had an outstanding afternoon in McGilley Fieldhouse on campus at the University of Saint Mary when they hosted their annual Spire Classic yesterday afternoon Friday, January 30th.

Alexsys Jacquez, currently ranked 6th in all of NAIA in the 103lb. weight-class, had another noteworthy performance, as she pinned fellow Spire standout Destiny Jones for the first-place finish. Alexsys had a quick and easy day by her standards, with four tech fall wins in her first four matches. Defeating Prado of York University 14-3, Janessa Avila of Missouri Valley 11-0, Kaylee Campbell 10-0, and Rilee Harrison of Oklahoma State 12-1 before her face off with Jones.

Destiny Jones, 8th ranked in all of NAIA in the 103lb. weight-class, finished in second-place falling to her teammate in the championship round, as mentioned previously. Jones still had a dominant afternoon on her home mats, after a first-round bye Destiny won by tech fall over Ventura of Missouri Valley 10-0, two pins over Harrison of OSU in two-minutes and Avila of Mo Val before she went on to battle Jacquez.

Junior Madison Kalamau had a stellar performance herself with a first-place finish in the 117lb. weight-class. Similar to fellow teammate Alexsys, Madison had four tech fall victories in her first four matches. She defeated Puga of Missouri Valley 10-0, Shaelynn Wallberg of Central Christian College 10-0, Wohrley of Carl Albert 10-0, and Metcalfe of KCAC rival Ottawa University 10-0. Madison's final match was against familiar face and 117lb. teammate Ka'aulani Hew-Len, where should would continue her win streak by way of fall.

Sticking in the 117lb. weight-class, Ka'aulani Hew-Len had a strong second-place finish with a first-round pin over Meyer of York in a mere 19-seconds. Hew-Len had a second-round forfeit and would then go on to win by fall over Mercalfe of OU and Puga of Missouri Valley. Again, Ka'aulani's final match would be against teammate Madison Kalamau where she would be defeated by way of fall in one-minute and forty seconds.

Holly Thacher would go 3-2 at the home event. Holly dropped her first two matches in the 124lb. weight-class to Hand of Ottawa and Cavaco of Mo Val, but would then go on to win every match after this. She defeated Cooper of Oklahoma State by tech fall 10-0 in the third round and would win by fall in the consolation bracket over Guerra of Missouri Valley with a swift twenty-one second pin. Holly's 9th place match would find her victorious by pin over Hudlemeyer of Mo Val.

Maci Pearson walked away strong with a second-place finish in a competitive 138lb. weight-class, winning three out of five matches by fall. Maci received a bye in the first round and she would then go on to pin Barnes of Carl Albert, Farquhar of OSU, and Dunn of York University all of which finished in two minutes or less. Maci's final first-place match would be a battle. She would eventually be defeated 10-0 by Benson of OSU.

Skylur Lewis in the 138lb. weight-class claimed third place in the classic. Skylur would drop her first match of the day to Benson of OSU by decision, but would not see another defeat. Lewis would claim victories in the next three matches by fall, defeated Graciano of Carl Albert, Goertz of MVC, and Howat of Ottawa University. Skylur would be dominant in her third-place match with a tech fall win over Farquhar of OSU 10-0.

Ariana Mercado in the 160lb. weight-class would finish in eighth-place on Friday. Mercado would fight hard all afternoon but wouldn't be able to walk away with a win. Ariana lost by decision 8-1 to OSU's Massie and was defeated by tech fall 12-2 by Willis of Mo Val. Ariana would drop her third-round match by injury default and would subsequently forfeit her remaining matches.

Kristal Zamora would have a great outing and finish in third-place in the 160lb. weight-class. Her first match of the day set a strong tone as she defeated Bott of Carl Albert by tech fall 10-0. Kristal would drop her next round to Slaughter of Mo Val, but would bounce back to defeat Dun of MVC 10-0. In the championship bracket, Zamora would be defeated 9-1 by McAtee of Colby Community College, but would come back strong to finish off her day in the third-place match with a win by fall over Massie of OSU.

The Spire women have a quick turnaround to re-focus on a huge opportunity this Sunday, February 1st as they compete at the KCAC/SAC Conference Duals at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with matches slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
