In a close battle on Saturday afternoon, the University of Saint Mary Spires women's soccer team faced defeat against the Doane Tigers at Crete, Nebraska. Despite a tough team effort, the Spires concluded the game with a final score of Doane 2, Saint Mary 1.
The match began with high intensity as the Tigers quickly secured a lead with two early goals in the first half. The Spires, not deterred, responded vigorously.
Rebecca Lord showcased her skills by scoring a crucial goal late in the first half, assisted by
Jessica Gil-Garcia, narrowing the gap to 2-1 by halftime. Goalkeeping duties were split between
Angelica Quintana-Aficial in the first half and
Avah Casarez in the second, both making essential saves to keep the Spires in contention.
The second half saw an intense battle for control. Despite numerous attempts and solid defensive plays, the Spires were unable to equalize, culminating the match at the same score that concluded the first half. The game-winning goal came from Doane's McKenna Rathbun, securing the victory for the Tigers.
