Grand View, Iowa—The Spires traveled to top ranked territory this weekend to take on a full day of competition in Des Moines, Iowa in the Grand View Open.
With losses from Anderson, Leffert, Smith, and Slaughter, heavyweight competitor
Devin Lolar fought his way into 6
th place, being the sole Spire to place on Saturday. Lolar earned his squad 4 points, with wins over Iowa Lakes CC, wins by decision over Puga from Pratt CC and Cooley of Maryville, and another win by fall over Howell of North Idaho.
There was a host of Spire wrestlers who saw highs and lows over the weekend, but just missed placing.
Ryan Buccat earned four wins on the day with a win by fall over Davis of Lindsey Wilson, Kentucky, win over Iowa Central CC, and two tech fall wins over Eads of Central Methodist University and Ali of Lindsey Wilson.
Orinn Hubbard in the 184lb-weight class came out on top in three of his five matches of the day with wins over Lusk from Benedictine, win by fall over Goodman of Sienna Heights, and a win over Hardy from Iowa Lakes CC. Trevor Mogren in the 149lb-weight class handled his own with wins over athletes from Pratt CC and Campbellsville, a tech fall win over Beaver from Baker University, and a win by fall over Andrusia of Southeast CC.
The Spires are coming back home to compete this Saturday, November 22
nd at 11:00 a.m. in their annual Spire Duals. This is your last chance to catch USM at home until January 5
th where they will take on the Swedes of Bethany College in a KCAC match-up.
