Leavenworth, Kan.—In an absolute nail biter of a match up held on Wednesday, October 22nd in Leavenworth, Kansas, the University of Saint Mary Spires played to a 1-1 draw against fellow KCAC rival, the Avila (MO) Eagles. The match up showcased defensive strengths and strategic gameplay from both squads, leading to a deadlock that remained unbroken by the final whistle.
The first and only goal for the Spires came early in the match, with senior
Rebecca Lord finding the net at the 4:58 mark in the first half, assisted by
Jordan Tran. This early lead set a challenging pace for the Eagles. After the chippy the first half concluded, the Spires maintained their narrow 1-0 lead.
Despite a strong defensive effort led by
Avah Casarez, the Saint Mary goalie who notably saved five shots, Avila countered in the second half. The equalizing goal from Annika Holtorf of Avila ensured the teams were tied by the final whistle. Both goalies, including Avila's Shae Sweeney who made six saves, were pivotal in keeping the score line tight.
