LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - The University of Saint Mary women's soccer team saw their season come to a close in a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Friends University in the KCAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Despite an early lead, the Spires ultimately fell as Friends surged back with a late-game rally.
Saint Mary opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Rebecca Lord, assisted by Nieves Vazquez, found the back of the net to give the Spires a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime. However, Friends equalized in the 58th minute, with Keily Larosee striking unassisted to tie the game 1-1. Larosee would prove to be the difference maker, scoring again in the 80th minute to give Friends the decisive lead.
The Spires' offense struggled to gain momentum, managing only three shots with two on goal, while Friends posted 16 shots, eight of them on target. Saint Mary goalkeeper Marisol Vargas made six saves to keep her team in contention, but Friends' pressure proved too much.
The loss closes out the Spires' season with a 10-8-1 overall record and an 8-5 mark in conference play, capping a strong year that saw Saint Mary secure a 5th-seed spot in the KCAC postseason.
