Leavenworth, Kan.– The University of Saint Mary Women's Soccer team took on York University on Saturday, winning 2-0. The Spire's overall record is now 3-2-2 and 3-0-1 in conference play. The Spires are off to their best conference starts in program history.
After a brief lightning delay, York went on the offensive to begin the game. A blocked shot by the Spires prevented York from taking the early lead in the first five minutes. After both teams traded shots, the Spires went in front in the 11th minute as Kaylee Shaw took advantage of a ricochet off the goalie to score for Saint Mary. Minutes later, Marisol Vargas recorded a big save to keep the Spires in front, 1-0. Vargas went on to save another big shot right before halftime.
The second half began with both teams threatening to score. A shot by York hit the crossbar, while a shot by Saint Mary drifted too high. The Spires extended their lead in the 58th minute as Jaidyn Yingling assisted Abbie Rodgers for the goal that put them up 2-0. York had their opportunities to score, with multiple shots on goal, but stout defensive play by Vargas and the Saint Mary defenders sealed the victory for the Spires.
