Leavenworth, KS- The University of Saint Mary Women's Flag Football team defeated Midland University Thursday, ending with a late interception to seal a victory for the Spires.
The first quarter was slow for the Spires, and after a long throw from the Warriors, Midland would take the lead to make the score 6-0. The game would go back and forth in the second quarter as the Spires would score a touchdown of their own when Shian Galbreath hit Ashlyn Tuss to tie the game up 6-6. Midland would score on the ensuing drive to take the lead with just under seven minutes left in the second half.
After the Spire's drive stalled around midfield, senior Jerrica Johnson would intercept Midland's quarterback and give Saint Mary the ball back. Galbreath would hit Tuss again for a long touchdown, and after the converted PAT, the Spires took the lead 13-6. With a little over a minute left, Saint Mary drove down the field, and Galbreath would throw her third touchdown of the quarter to Elle Campbell, giving the Spires a 20-12 lead going into halftime.
Caroline Simpson would set up the Spire's final touchdown after an interception midway through the third quarter to take a commanding 26-12 lead. Midland would score one more time late in the fourth quarter, bringing them within one score of the Spires, making the score 26-19. Simpson sealed the game for Saint Mary with her third interception of the day on the goal-line to deny the Warriors a chance to tie up the game.
