Leavenworth, KS- The University of Saint Mary Flag Football team lost 38-25 in a hard fought game against the visiting Midland University Warriors Thursday and were unable to complete their 2nd half comeback.
The Spires found themselves in a battle against the Warriors as they inherited an early 13 point deficit after giving up two quick touchdowns in the first quarter. Saint Mary worked tirelessly to try and even up the score, late in the second quarter after the Spire failed to convert on fourth down Ashlyn Tuss intercepted a ball giving possession back to the Spires. With just 50 seconds left USM was able to score but did not convert the point after attempt to make it 13-6 at the half.
The Warriors lead off the scoring in the second half as they scored in just two plays, USM had an answer and the ensuing drive scored putting the Spires within a touchdown. A score and a stop by the Spires made the score 19 all with five minutes left in the third quarter. Midland would score to end the third and the Spires found themselves tied after Shian Galbreath, who had a total of four passing touchdowns on the day, hit Daire Stelljes for a touchdown tying the game at 25 with 10 minutes left. The Spires could not complete the comeback and did not find the endzone for the rest of the day.
The Spires will play their last home game of the season against Kansas Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. Friday.
