WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Saint Mary Women's soccer team battled it out with the Falcons at Friends University late Saturday morning to begin KCAC play. After fighting a hard first half and holding the Falcons to a slim 1-0 lead, the Falcons managed to break away in the second half, leaving the Spires trailing 4-0 to end the game.
Saint Mary is now 0-3-2 overall and 0-1 in the KCAC.
The Spires came out strong to start this game, though going scoreless in the first half, they had good communication and control of the ball which kept the Falcons to only one score. However, in the second half the Falcons started heating up scoring two within the first 15 minutes. With the possession going back and forth, Spire Kylie Wilson almost gave the Spires their first score but the shot attempt was blocked by the Falcons goalie. Nearing the end of the game, the Falcons were able to garner one last score in the 87th minute to close the door. As for Spires goalie, Maea Ploetz, she finished the game with a notable performance of 13 blocked SOGs and 10 saves!
The Spires will continue their season on Wednesday when they host Southwestern College at 5 p.m. at Berkel Memorial Stadium.
