Women's Soccer Ties With Avila In Season Finale

LEAVENWORTH, KAN. – The University of Saint Mary women's soccer team tied with Avila University Tuesday night in their final game of the season at Berkel Memorial Stadium on senior night. The final score was 1-1.

The Spires finish their season 4-8-4 overall and 2-6-4 KCAC.

Things started off slow for the Spires, as they only had three shots in the first half. Natasha Webster took the first shot for Saint Mary in the opening minutes of the game, but the Eagles goalie made the save. Avila tested the Saint Mary defense as they took five straight shots that were unsuccessful. Then with 10 minutes remaining in the half, Grace Sanford and Megan McMillen had good looks to score but were denied the goal by the Eagles defense. With seven minutes left in the half, Avila scored and led 1-0 at halftime.

Saint Mary came out with a spark in the second half as Anna Soetaert dribbled down the field and took a shot just behind the 20 yard line, and stuck it in the top right corner of the goal to tie it up 1-1 just seconds into the half. Avila once again tested the Saint Mary defense as they took back-to-back shots, but the defense held on. Neither team was able to score and forced overtime.

Avila took two quick shots to try and sneak away with the win, but missed high and wide. Brittany Ortiz came close to ending the game but the Eagles goalie made the save. Both teams held on defensively in 2OT to force the tie.

Saint Mary took nine shots as a team, all on goal. Webster, McMillen, Sanford, and Soetaert each had two shots. Ortiz had one shot. Lauryn Airy had 14 saves in goal.
