The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) has announced the conference's 2010 baseball and softball regular season awards, and five Spires are among the players being honored.
From the USM Baseball Team, Josh Barnes, a junior outfielder out of Easton, Kan., earned a 2010 KCAC Gold Glove as one of the top defensive players at his position. Barnes and sophomore Devin Hupp, an infielder also out of Easton, were also named to the KCAC's All-Conference Second Team.
"I'm proud of Josh and Devin," said USM Head Baseball Coach Rob Miller. "The entire team played hard this year, and these awards are a recognition of that effort."
From the USM Softball Team, Lady Spires catcher Nichole Twitchel, a senior out of Lansing, Kan., was named to the KCAC All-Conference First Team; pitcher Amie Riddle, a junior from Tonganoxie, Kan., made the Second Team; and infielder Jessica Gridley, a sophomore out of Raytown, Mo., made the Honorable Mention team.
Lori Lorenzen, USM's head softball coach, praised her players for their work this season.
"These awards are a big honor for Nichole, Amie, and Jessica," Lorenzen said. "The awards emphasize what great players—and students—I have on the USM Softball team."
The Lady Spires made the KCAC Softball Championship Tournament held on Thursday April 29, and Friday, April 30, but was eliminated after losses to McPherson College and eventual KCAC runner-up Friends University on Day One of the tournament.
The Baseball Team didn't qualify for the KCAC tournament.
