Alex WaiteBrad HeimThe Saint Mary Men's Soccer Teams had a strong showing in the annual KCAC all-conference awards.

From the USM men's team, Alex Waite was named KCAC Goalkeeper of the Year. Waite led the conference, averaging nearly 9.5 saves per contest. USM midfielder Brad Heim also made the conference list, named second team All-KCAC.

Preston BeckerTwo Spires Soccer players were named as "Champions of Character" award winners by the KCAC last week.

The awardees were Saint Mary Men's Soccer goalkeeper Preston Becker and Women's Soccer midfielder Kathleen Hermesch.

Derek Mazeitis, USM's head soccer coach, said, "Preston and Kathleen are both very deserving of this award. They both live moral and value-driven lives while working hard on the field and in the classroom. They're both Academic All-Americans and each play integral roles on their perspective teams. They set a fine example for other student athletes to follow."

Six University of Saint Mary Men’s and Women’s Soccer Players Named to All-Conference Teams

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—Six University of Saint Mary Spires soccer players—three each from
the men’s and women’s soccer teams—were named to all-conference teams by the Kansas
Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) last week for their strong performances during the
regular season. Read More [PDF] >>

The University of Saint Mary Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams welcomed back their alumni for the university’s annual alumni soccer game Saturday, Aug. 28, at USM’s Football/Soccer Complex.
After a hard-fought afternoon, the USM women defeated the alumni 3-1. The USM men also prevailed against their alumni 5-3.

Coach Derek Mazeitis was pleased with the turnout from the alumni and hopes to see even more former Spires take the field next year.

“It is a really special event for our alumni to come back and see where our programs are headed,” Coach Mazeitis said. “It also helps our current student-athletes prepare them for the upcoming season.”

The USM Spires Soccer Teams play in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) and are associated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Division II.

Under Coach Derek Mazeitis, the men’s and women’s soccer teams have earned berths into regional play. Also, a number of players on both squads have been honored with all-conference recognition and all-regional awards. Several women’s players have also been honored as academic All-Americans and the women’s program has been named an NAIA scholar team.

Both squads play at USM’s brand new soccer field, which boasts a scoreboard, fully-wired press box and seat for up to 1,000 screaming fans.

The soccer season begins in late August and concludes in early November. Watch this space for the latest on USM Soccer.
