First Homegame Played at the New
USM Sports Complex
Last Saturday, our Football Spires lost to Bethel
College, 29-22.
Our first home game on campus was an emotional day with a large crowd. We honored
junior Nate Carry, who was temporarily paralyzed from the waist down in an
accident at his summer job when a crate fell on him on June 25. (Nate is taking
this semester off as he rehabilitates) His jersey number, 25, was painted on
the field. And he joined the captains on field before the game for the coin-flip.
Saint Mary was led by quarterback Daniel Robles, who hit 21 of 41 passes for
279 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Kyle Jones
rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown. Glen Wallin had eight catches for 72 yards.
USM plays included a fake punt, a long pass for 67, and another pass for 45
that put us on the seven-yard line.
The Bethel Threshers have been ranked 13th in the country in the NAIA poll.
So, it was impressive to be leading this team with five minutes left in the
game.

Quarterback Daniel Robles has been named offensive player
of the week in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opening weekend.
Robles led our Spires to a 26-20 win over Southwestern College
(Winfield, Kan.) during a rain soaked, muddy game on Saturday,
Sept. 13. This was USM’s
first-ever win in Winfield.
The red-shirt sophomore completed 24 of 33 pass attempts for 336 yards and 3
touchdowns with 1 interception (a deflection off his own receiver’s hands),
and he also rushed 7 carries for 1 yard. Robles completed a remarkable 73% of
his passes.
Our first home game is at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday against Bethel College. Tailgating
celebration begins in the McGilley lot at 11 a.m.
