USM Finishes 2nd in KCAC; Tournament Play Begins

Leavenworth – The University of Saint Mary swept Sterling College on Sunday to lock up 2nd place in the KCAC regular season as well as the #2 seed in the KCAC Conference Tournament. The Spires rallied for a Game 1 victory when senior Hogan Matson led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homerun to left-center. It was Matson’s 4th walk-off hit this season for the Spires (23 – 16, 15 – 9).

In Game 2, the drama was once again at play. After giving up a run in the top of the 10th to go down 3 – 2, Saint Mary rallied for two runs in the bottom half. Senior Justin Sumner lined a fastball into left field scoring the game winning run as the 2009 Senior Day will be one to remember.

The 2009 KCAC Tournament begins Wednesday, April 29th with the #4 seed Friends University playing the #5 seed Tabor College in the play-in game. The winner will advance to play #1 seed Kansas Wesleyan on Thursday. The #2 seed Spires get into action at 11 a.m. Thursday against #3 seed Sterling College. The winner will play Friday at 3:00 p.m. with the loser playing at 7 p.m. Thursday. The KCAC Tournament is being held at historic Rathert Stadium in Junction City, Kan.

USM 2009 Senior Day Moved
Leavenworth – The 2009 Saint Mary Senior Day has been moved to Sunday, April 26th . The doubleheader against Sterling College will begin at 1 p.m. with Senior Day recognition being held in between games. This year, the Spires will honor the hard work and commitment of Hogan Matson (Kansas City, KS.), Matt Parmalee (Kansas City, KS.), Ryan Reed (Kansas City, KS.), Evan Reynolds (Shawnee, KS.) Dustin Smith (Olathe, KS.), Mike Stuart (Leavenworth, KS.), Justin Sumner (Rich Hill, MO.) and Lucas Williamson (Tonganoxie, KS.).

Join us in honoring these individuals and cheer them to victory as they play their last regular season games. The Spires will be in action next in the KCAC Tournament (Junction City, KS.) beginning on April 30th. More information to follow.

USM to take on Wichita State

LEAVENWORTH – The University of Saint Mary (14-8-1, 6-2) will play Division I opponent Wichita State (15-10) on Tuesday, April 7th in a one 9-inning match-up. The contest will take place at Eck Stadium in Wichita, KS with the first pitch coming at 7 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the Spires and the Shockers and the fourth overall meeting between Saint Mary and a Division I opponent.

The Spires will resume action Thursday, April 9th with a home conference doubleheader against Ottawa University beginning at 1 p.m. before traveling to Ottawa on Saturday, April 11th for a 1p.m. start time.

USM Baseball to Participate in RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational
The USM Baseball team will play in the 2009 RussMatt Greater Phoenix Baseball Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., over Spring Break.

USM will compete March 7-9. The schedule for our baseball Spires is as follows.

  • March 7 - 12:30 p.m. vs. Malone (Ohio) at Gene Autry Park
  • March 7 - 3 p.m. vs. Dakota State (South Dakota) at Gene Autry
  • March 8 - 12 p.m. double-header vs. Dakota State at Gene Autry
  • March 9 - 9:30 a.m. double-header vs. Malone at Snedigar Field

The Gene Autry Park and the Snedigar Complex are the two main venues at RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational. Gene Autry Park is at 4125 E. McKellips Rd., Mesa, Ariz. Snedigar is at 4500 S. Basha Rd. in Chandler, Ariz.

USM Baseball Home Opener Changed
Due to the beautiful weather predicted for the upcoming weekend, the University of Saint Mary baseball team has moved its home opener from Feb. 14 to Saturday, Feb. 7.

The Spires will take on William Penn, ranked 27th in the pre-season NAIA poll, Saturday, Feb 7th in a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.

The following weekend, Saint Mary will once again play William Penn at home on Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. with a possible JV double header scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 15.

Spires Picked 3rd in Preseason Coaches Poll
WICHITA, KS – The 2009 baseball preseason coaches poll was released November 12, 2008 and the University of Saint Mary was picked third in the KCAC Conference. Kansas Wesleyan, the defending conference champions, was picked first after receiving all 7 first place votes as well as receiving 43 national votes.

The University of Saint Mary baseball program is now entering its tenth year as a program. Over the past nine years, Saint Mary has consistently grown into a competitive and well-respected program not only locally and regionally, but also nationally. Head Coach Rob Miller, now entering his seventh year, has taken the USM program to new heights. Over the past four years, he has produced four winning seasons, finished now lower than 3rd in conference play, participated in the past four conference championship games, and won the 2005 tournament. Likewise, the program has annually found a spot in the Region IV national rankings while playing top competition. Having produced an Honorable Mention All-American in 2007 and a First Team All-American in 2008, Saint Mary produces top players regioanlly and nationally!

Saint Mary plays in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) and is affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
