Women's Cross Country - Mon, Sep. 11, 2017

The Saint Mary men's and women's cross country teams competed at the John McNichol's Invite hosted by NCAA D1 Indiana State University on Saturday September 9th. The races were held at Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

The men's team finished 2nd in the small school division. In the process they, beat NAIA #12 Marian Indiana by nearly 50 points. Along with NCAA D2 McKendree State. The Saint Mary men unofficially (due to NCAA D1 scoring rules) beat NCAA D1 Butler and Evansville University. The men's team was led by senior Tony Weber who won the men's small school division by nearly a minute and placed 8th overall including all NCAA D1 competitors. Tony ran a time of 25:47 placing him among the University of Illinois top 5 runners, top 2 runners from Indiana State and Louisville, and beating in the number one runners from Butler and Evansville.  Following Weber, in the small school division the Spires placed 6th, 8th, 11th, and 16th to round out their Top 5. These athletes were Jermie Johnson, Jeremy Brittain, Luke Skinner, and Tegan Michael. They helped Saint Mary put four athletes in front of the top runner at #12 Marian (Ind.) and five athletes in front of their second best runner.

Women's cross country finished 3rd in the small school division getting beat by #23 Marian (Ind.) while beating NCAA D2 McKendree State. The Spires also unofficially beat NCAA D1 Evansville University. The women were led by Lorena Moreno who won the small school division. The next four runners where Shelby Stouffer 13th overall, Kaitlynn Ellis 20th, Kristina Silvers 25th, and Mariah Stein 26th. The Spires did a great job of pack running at this early season meet while also taking 28th, 29th, 30th, and 31st, 33rd, and 36th place.

Saint Mary will race again next week at the Missouri Southern Stampede being held in Joplin, MO on Saturday September 16th. The men will race at 9 AM and the women at 10:30 AM
