Men's Soccer - Thu, Sep. 7, 2017

The Saint Mary men's soccer team hosted Avila on Wednesday night at Charles J. Berkel Memorial Stadium. The non-conference matchup was a preview of what will be a future KCAC foe for the Spires. Avila will join the KCAC in the 2018-2019 school year.

Avila staked themselves to an early lead as they scored the first two goals of the game. The Eagles outshot the Spires 21-6 on the match, but 10 saves kept Saint Mary in the game. Ben Rivera logged the majority of the minutes in goal making seven saves and allowing two goals. Enrique Gonzales also saw time in goal making two saves and allowing one goal.

After an Avila corner kick with seven minutes to play in the first half, Saint Mary controlled the ball and got out ahead of the Avila defense. Branden Sanchez used nifty footwork to create some space on the final Avila defender and sent home a left-footed goal with 6:11 on the clock to cut the deficit in half for the Spires.

The score remianed 2-1 through halftime. The Spires would be turned away in the second half, however. Avila put in the final blow when they netted a goal with four minutes on the clock. The Spires would eventually fall 3-1.

Saint Mary is back in action on Saturday when they host Park at 7pm.
