University of Saint Mary Senior Football stand-out Kyle Dougherty has been selected the 2016-17 KCAC Male Student-Athlete Champion of Character of the Year. He will be formally recognized at the KCAC Sport Management Conference on Aug. 8 at York College. The KCAC Champions of Character Male & Female Student-Athletes of the Year are presented by IMA, Inc. and Dissinger Reed.

"Kyle performs at a high level in everything he approaches," said Jim Zimmerman, USM sport management program director. "He is well respected by his peers, faculty, and coaching staff at Saint Mary. He shows initiative and a strong work ethic, and he represents the NAIA and KCAC very well. Kyle's most important contribution to Saint Mary is his character and demeanor. He is consistently at other events around campus and his kindness and support does not go unnoticed."

Dougherty has been involved in the University of Saint Mary food drive, Leavenworth Lion's Club Trash Bag Delivery, reading at Leavenworth Elementary Schools, and security as Kansas City Sporting events and concerts. He holds a 3.6 GPA, majoring in both Sport Management and Political Science.

USM's Dean of Students Lisa Potoka had this to say about Dougherty, "It is safe to say that due to Kyle's selflessness, determination, work ethic and passion, the University of Saint Mary and the City of Leavenworth is a better place after having Kyle as a student-athlete and resident."

And on the field, Dougherty has the same impact. He recorded 22 receptions for 195 yards and one touchdown — helping his team to the best season in school history, finishing second in the KCAC with an 8-3 record.

"I have had the pleasure of coaching and working daily with a positive, intelligent and ambitious young man," head football coach Jay Osborne said. "I have not met anyone yet that would have a negative thing to say abot Kyle."

About KCAC Champion of Character Student-Athlete of the Year Award

The KCAC Champion of Character Student-Athlete of the Year Award was developed by the KCAC Champions of Character Committee to recognize significant contributions of a student-athlete who excels in the classroom, athletics, and community.

Each KCAC institution has one representative on the conference-level Champions of Character Committee. The committee members voted on the award based on the pool of nominees.  Each KCAC institution is able to select one nominee from their institution to be considered for the award.  Representatives cannot vote for nominees from their institution.
