Men's Lacrosse - Fri, Mar. 17, 2017

The Saint Mary men's lacrosse team closed their spring break road trip with two games at Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Spires would fall to Tennessee Wesleyan 13-9 but bounced back the next day to top Montreat by a score of 21-5.

In the loss to Tennessee Wesleyan, the Spires got behind early. Tennessee Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the game. The Spires answered back with a goal of their own and matched Wesleyan in the second quarter as each team scored three goals. Tennessee Wesleyan pulled away in the third quarter pushing their lead to four goals by the end of the period. The Spires would be held off in the fourth as they took the 13-9 loss.

Matthew Waeckerle scored a team high three goals. Andrew Orr and Cory Wunderlich each scored two. Billy Dineen and Mackinley Morgan each added one. Brandon Newman had a team high three ground balls. The Spires were eight for 24 on face off attempts. Zander Smith caused four turnovers and made 10 saves from the goalie position.

The Spires dominated in a win over Montreat. An 8-1 advantage in the first quarter kickstarted a 21-5 win for Saint Mary. Morgan scored seven goals to lead the Spires. Waeckerle added six. Morgan and Waeckerle both had five assists. Wunderlich had four goals. Tanner Stone, Wunderlich, and Newman each had five ground balls. Smith made five saves and Sean Maguire played the second half in goal and made two saves.

The men's lacrosse team will be back in action on Tuesday, March 21 at Colorado State University. The game will be at 6pm.
