The Saint Mary men's lacrosse team began their spring break road trip with a match at Cumberlands in Kentucky on Tuesday. The Spires took a tough 13-12 loss and are now 1-2 on the season.

After falling behind 5-3 after the first quarter, the Spires matched Cumberlands with three goals each in the second quarter and trailed by two at halftime. In the third quarter, Saint Mary used a 4-1 advantage to lead 10-9.

After Cumberlands tied the game with a goal early in the fourth, Saint Mary scored twice to push out to a 12-10 lead. Cumberlands then scored twice to tie the game and force overtime. Cumberlands would take the game on a goal with 1:53 left in OT.

Cory Wunderlich, Matthew Waeckerle and Mackinley Morgan each scored a team high three goals in the loss. Brandon Newman had a team high eight ground balls. Alexander Buslovich and Waeckerle each had five ground balls. Elliott Conklin added two goals while Andrew Orr had one.

Lorenzo Gioia won seven of 12 face offs for the Spires. Zander Smith played the entire game in goal and made 17 saves. The Spires had less turnovers, and a better clear percentage than Cumberlands in the match, but were outshot and won 10 less face offs.

Saint Mary is back in action today against Tennessee Wesleyan.
